SSE signs up to UN Global Compact

SSE has become a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative with over 9,800 business and non-business participants across more than 160 countries.
The UNGC supports companies to take a sustainable approach to business and align strategies and operations with ten universal principles around human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. As a signatory to the Compact, SSE reinforces its sustainability values and demonstrates its commitment to a responsible business approach to stakeholders.
Rachel McEwen, SSE’s Director of Sustainability, said: “Becoming a signatory to the UN Global Compact is an important step for SSE to take. It re-confirms our sustainability values, it means we are listening to the priorities of the global development movement and it means we will report against consistent criteria which can easily be seen by our stakeholders.
“We know good practice in one area does not offset harm in another. By incorporating the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into strategies, policies and procedures, and reinforcing a culture of integrity, SSE is not only upholding its basic responsibilities but also setting the stage for long-term success.”
The UNGC believes business can have a positive impact through taking shared responsibility to contribute to creating better societies. SSE agrees, believing a healthy society creates a good operating environment for business, and will disclose the contribution it makes to society against these principles.
