In an emergency

If you smell gas or you are worried about gas safety, phone the 24-hour Northern Ireland Gas Emergency Service on 0800 002 001.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off the gas supply at the meter, unless the meter is located in a cellar or basement - in which case, do not enter.

  1. If there is a smell of gas in the cellar or basement, you should evacuate the building.

  1. Extinguish all naked flames and do not smoke or strike any matches.

  1. Open doors and windows for ventilation.

  1. Check gas appliances to see if the gas has been left on unlit or that a pilot is out.

  1. Do no turn on or off any electrical switches, including door entry systems.

  1. Call 0800 002 001 (Northern Ireland Gas Emergency number). Never leave it to anyone else to call the Emergency number and make sure you allow immediate access to an engineer.

When you call 0800 002 001 you will be asked a few questions about the gas leak to allow the Northern Ireland Gas Emergency Service to ensure an engineer is sent to the right address and provide you with the right safety advice.
